"Cabelas boasts 176,000 sq.ft. of floor space ... with every imaginable item for the avid hunting, fishing and camping enthusiast."
|
Cabelas was the 'hot-ticket' that sparked the construction boom at The Highlands. It's little wonder as Cabelas has become the 'must stop' superstore for millions of outdoor enthusiasts
since opening their doors in August '04. With a massive 176,000 square feet of floor space Cabelas stocks about every imaginable item the avid hunting, fishing and camping enthusiast could want.
Just 2 years later the Wild Escape
Theme Park was announced. After some initial setbacks, the entertainment leg of the development is firmly back on track after the Ohio County Development Authority recently secured the necessary permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
In March '09 the OCDA was issued a permit from the State of West Virginia that allows work to begin effective March 21. However, due to changes brought on by the Corps of Engineers, the project has to be reconfigured. Earth moving will now involve 15 million cubic yards instead of 8 million. Water and sewer lines must also be reconfigured.
Mr. Steve Minard, president of Attraction Management Services, LLC, said this new planning process could take several months. A start date for construction to begin can not be set until the revised plans have been finalized.
The Wild Escape Theme Park will have both indoor and outdoor rides, amusements
and noted entertainers. Hotels and spas will also be part of the overall development. Due to the expansive nature of the project the park will be constructed in multiple phases over the course of several years.
The Highlands has seen a vast number of store openings in the past 2 years including major retailers Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl's and JC Penney. The Power Center was a hotbed of construction activity all last summmer. Stores opening during that time included Books-A-Million, Fashion Bug, TJ Maxx, Lane Bryant, Michaels Arts & Crafts and many more. Most recent has been the opening of a Best Buy electronics store. For complete store listings check out our store directory.
All that shopping can make one pretty hungry. Don't despair. The Highlands now offers almost a dozen great eateries to choose from ... with more on the way! Cheddars Casual Cafe, Olive Garden, Cracker Barrel, Applebee's, Eat 'N Park, Bob Evans, Panera Bread, Quizno's are just a few you can choose from. Additional restaurants slated to open in the coming months include Quaker Steak & Lube, Wings To Go, Fusion Japanese Steakhouse, Indigo Joe's and Fat Fish Blue and Funny Bone Comedy Club.
After shopping and enjoying a nice meal you may as well take in a movie at the new 50,000 sq. ft., 14-screen, Marquee Cinema theatre. The cinemas are state-of-the-art, complete with stadium seating (super comfortable seats with drink holders). The lobby has high ceilings painted in bright colors and neon lighting that's sure to put you in a fun mood. Grab some fresh popcorn and ice-cold drinks and head in to the theatre for some great entertainment.
